Protecting Blog Content
The issue of Blog content being plagiarized is something that has always been in the shadows, but the recent case of Flare Magazine, Islamabad and their regular lifting of articles from the Blogosphere has certainly brought this to a more urgent light.
Now the truth is that the essence of Brand Protection and Intellectual Property Rights Protection is still not very well known in Pakistan and people are generally unaware of what their rights are in this respect.
Pertaining to Blogs, there has been talk that all Blog material is automatically copyrighted. This is wrong from a legal standpoint; if you are publishing Online, than you need to copyright the material with the relevant Copyright Authority in your country.
Of course, it is irresponsible, lazy and criminal; as well as being an affront to the writing community when one writer plagiarizes from another writer, but legally, unless that content is protected, it is not a crime.
To start off, I suggest that all Bloggers and Webzine editors have a Copyright Notice on their Blogs/Website to ensure that at least a) the person copying knows that it is under Copyright Protection, b)it can be proven in the court of law that the writer had warned others from copying his/her material.
